The Liberty Statue at Gellért Hill in Budapest was first erected in 1947 in remembrance of the Soviet liberation of Hungary during World War 2, which ended the occupation by Nazi Germany. It was built ”To the memory of the liberating Soviet heroes [erected by] the grateful Hungarian people [in] 1945”.
After the 1989 transition from communist rule to democracy, the statue was modified to ”To the memory of those all who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary”. The russian texts from the Statue was removed. After a 2025 renovation, a Christian cross was based placed at the base of the statue.

For this exhibition I’m showing different concepts I’ve been working on for the spring /summer of 2026. My main focus has become getting rid of complexification, and finding the origin story, the myth. When subtracting, the narrative often becomes either mythical and symbolic, or just plain and boring.
Like the statue in Budapest, when something is gone, only myths exist. But is this myth important to begin with? The symbol what something has become through consecration, is more important than its past or future. The artist is the Agent, who is making it all happen.

Walter Götsch is a Finnish/German conceptual visual artist whose practice combines anthropology, field research, sculpture, land art, and myth-based narratives. He is working within the artistic practice he has developed, Mythographic Geospatial Art. His work explores the intersections of myths, human activity, and natural environments. It contributes to contemporary environmental art, situated knowledge, and alternative cosmologies.
